And yet, that education often does not happen, or when it does people don't follow the guidelines. To me, it depends on three things: With that having been said, let's look at why you might want to run it, and from that, see if we can come up with some ideas for how often it might make sense to run. Thus, until that overwrite actually happens, we have the ability to "un-delete" a file using tools like Recuva. However, since most of the tools including CCleaner Drive Wiper are software solutions they operate on a level where a multitude of reasons could prevent them from accessing certain parts of the hard drive.
Drive Wiper creates a dummy image as large as the free space on your drive. It then overwrites every single cluster in that image. Using passes simply means you will overwrite the same part of your hard drive multiple times which doesn't add any additional security.
You would be better of to do a single overwrite, close and reopen CCleaner and run another single pass. This way a new image will be created which might be able to cover parts previously not available for wiping. Erasers write a certain character to each byte of free space unallocated space on each pass.
A different character may be used on each pass. Data is stored in 1s and 0s, charged or not charged, magnetic or not on the storage device. Once it is overwritten regardless of the pattern there simply isn't usable previous data to be restored.
There is no "depth" and no "history" to be recovered, there is no "half charged" or "half magnetic" state. If hardware was able to "read history" out of the storage you would be facing regular corruption of your file system because it would accidently happen all the time.
Data is written in bytes in hexadecimal characters and your talking bits. Expensive and sophisticated analysis of removed disk can recover erased data using edges of write track where weak image remains unless erased about 7 times.
The wipe free space function of Ccleaner will overwrite this free space. It's useful if you have sensitive documents etc that you want to be permanently deleted. This Site Might Help You. Wipe free space securely erases all unused space on your hard drive.
If you delete a file, it is not really gone. The space it occupied on your hard drive is simply marked as being available instead and will be overwritten when needed. It has nothing to do with memory.
The idea is to remove the traces of deleted or moved files from their original location. When files are deleted they are not removed, the are renamed to a name the computer can not show. This allows for the recycle bin to keep a record of hem in case you need to recover them.
Emptying the bin just removes that record, allowing the machine to re-use that space, otherwise the disk would rapidly fill up. The data is still imprinted on the disk. This is how recovery experts recover accidentally deleted files, including police agencies.
After the wipe those traces are near impossible to read. Free space is on your hard drive, called storage, memory is temporary and called RAM. Cleaning free space is a good idea to do once in a while. After you delete a file on your computer, there are still fragments left scattered on your hard drive.
This feature basically cleans them off. It's basically a better version of windows defragment tool. They also claim if you "wipe" a file or cluster of space enough times over, no one can go back in and recover files you tried to delete.
It depends on just how likely it is that someone who ends up with your hard disk will bother to see what's in the free space. It's that last one that, for me, reduces the need for free space wiping to near zero for most people.
We're just not that interesting. And, perhaps more to the point, there's probably much more interesting stuff in the files that haven't been deleted. If a thief wants to go spelunking for data, they'll probably find plenty in the files and folders that already exist.
On the other hand, perhaps you are the target of someone's attention. Perhaps you do have a sensitive job or work in a sensitive industry where data theft and espionage are not only possible, but even likely. There are several additional steps like encryption that you should be taking, but when it comes to free-space wiping, then I'd be doing it often.
A simple overwrite does exactly what's described above: As I discussed in What difference does multiple-overwrite delete really make? The solution is to overwrite it more than once. CCleaner offers the option of overwriting 3, 7, and even 35 times.
Three's probably plenty, but if you're in some top-secret government agency, perhaps you'll want to consider more. What difference does multiple-overwrite delete really make? Deleted files may be recoverable.
Overwriting data makes it impossible for common tools and multiple overwrites make it impossible for any. Secure Delete is a way to make sure that when you delete a file it cannot be recovered. Understanding Secure Delete is important to protect sensitive data properly.
Is deleting a file and emptying my recycle bin enough? Deleted files might be easily recovered unless you take additional steps to ensure that they're not. I'll look at why and what to do. Shredders or Secure Delete tools actually address two distinct problems, only one of which applies to Flash.
Addressing the other could be harmful. I did a complete reset to factory settings and lost that video I thought I had it on a disk - I was wrong. The last reset was done well over a year ago. I know I've used CCleaner in the past but don't believe that I've used it since my last reset it's not installed on my computer now.
If someone works for an ultra-top secret company and possesses some super sensitive information, would not the person's company give a seminar or tutorial on how to keep their data safe? My son works for a large aircraft company and the designs are highly secret.
They now crush all old hard drives and incinerate the debris. I run CCleaner on a daily basis — before I shut down my PC for the night possibly overkill, bit it only takes seconds to run on my machine. I have noticed that CCleaner takes differing times to run depending on the particular browser you're running.
Firefox is around seconds, Chrome around seconds, and finally IE x anything up to minutes! This seems to be caused by the way each browser organises its caching. I'm guessing that were one to run CCleaner for the very first and only time on a machine, there's a chance it could take three hours to finish its scan, particularly if you've been tardy with your PC's "housework" over a lengthy period of time.
I always use CCleaner's three-pass method as I reckon this is more than sufficient for any average home user. I agree with Leo that 37 passes, whilst not only massive overkill, is a pointless waste of time better spent doing other system housework.

The person asking the question wasn't using the cleaning function, but the drive wipe function which can easily take a lot of time. You can get a free version of Recuva just click on the underlined 'Recuva' word itself in this Leo's article which will then take you to his another article on Recuva where there's a link to their official website with a download of a free version yes, Leo always does re direct you to the official website s of whatever he recommends.
No harm to try Install it and perform a recovery. Unless you don't want to install something that you wouldn't use often enough. But how important could that deleted file be to you? At the end of the day you can always uninstall it.
I recall there's also a portable version of free Recuva not sure if still, but recall the discussions about it, - just browse the comments in Leo's article on Recuva. Shelly, btw, talking Recuva is slightly off the topic in this article - sorry!
Best, search Leo's answers first! Shelly Unfortunately, a factory re-install overwrites everything on your hard drive. There may be a small outside chance that if the file resides on an unwritten portion of the drive, it might be recoverable shortly after the re-install.
But after a year of use since the re-install, the likelihood of recovery is virtually zero. There are additional aspects that should be addressed in an article like this, namely the free space at the tail end of the last sector of a file, the deleted entries in the file directory which still contain nearly complete file names, and the swap file on the hard drive.
Perhaps even the hibernation file on the hard drive. A program such as BCWipe will wipe all of these, except perhaps the hibernation file. From what I've read about CCleaner, it doesn't address these concerns. If your hard drive had super sensitive data on it, then you will want to consider these areas, because the bad guys probably will.
I had a friend that had his house broken into and computers stolen. Because he had all his records on the computer, he had to get all new credit cards etc. At that point you have no idea how sophisticated the burglar was although the likelihood is that they are not all that computer savvy.
However, with the computer gone am I willing to risk it. Since then, I encrypted my data drive and run Eraser in the background at night to erase the free space. Yeppers It would not be possible to wipe the free space inside an encrypted file with out first opening it.
Since the free space is encrypted, the free space cleaner would have no way of determining what is free space or not. In any case, there is no need to wipe the free space on encrypted data as this free space would be inaccessible due to the encryption.
If you have a question, start by using the search box up at the top of the page - there's a very good chance that your question has already been answered on Ask Leo!. If you don't find your answer, head out to http: It's a 1TB drive.
How long should it take? This size of the unused space; the drive may be 1TB, but if you've nearly filled it it'll take less time than if it is nearly empty. As well as all of this, there is no real reason to wipe the drive's freespace unless you are selling it.
I'm glad to know this erase free space issue is not just happening to me. I have let CCleaner run for several days in hopes of overwriting the free space on my Lacie 1 TB external hard drive. I am running El Capitan, CCleaner's window just sits there spinning.
No text is ever displayed in the "Details" window. And it won't quit without going to "Force Quit". I downloaded the free demo version of CCleaner 1. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I have tried its Erase Free Space option five times over the past couple of weeks, both on the Lacie and other external drives.
Each time, the same thing happens as described above. Because of this, CCleaner would not be a product that I would purchase or endorse. My message to the CCleaner folks would be, make it work as advertized and maybe I'd take another look at it.
Waiting for days to see if it is going to finish overwriting free space is pretty counter-productive and unacceptable to me. You can't know what it is doing since nothing is indicated regarding progress or lack thereof.
I have nothing invested but the time I've wasted trying to make it work, so I can't really be too upset. I just felt the need to share with others like highmarcs above who've also been a tad bewildered and disappointed by it's apparent "Erase Free Space" deficiency.
Well, guess what folks. I feel a little dumb not remembering this, but I'm fessing up now so I can have a clean conscience about it. But where I was really dumb was to have purchased it without thoroughly checking it out first.
I would not have bought it had I known of the problem. I had not planned to contact CCleaner about it since I thought I was working from a demo version. It wasn't expensive, but, hey, since I have real money invested, I feel like I have to go to them now with the problem and see what their answer is.
I will report back here once I get something further to tell. You didn't mention the number of wipes you're doing assuming this is offered on CC Mac. This will have a crucial affect on the time. As far as I recall not being a Mac user CC's erase free space on a Mac is performed by issuing an internal Mac command, whereupon CC sits back and waits for the command to complete.
So if the command was issued natively it would take near enough just as long as CC does. Responses do not answer the question. I would like to know how long it will take for cleaning 1 terabyte of freespace per pass.
An approximate estimate is fine. I have assumed that if Ccleaner is sitting with the whirling circle it is working but i am not clear that this is the case. It would be useful to be able to estimate how long it needs.
I'm having an issue with this as well. One issue may be that this drive contains my iTunes library, and at some point a screen saver showing album covers from iTunes kicked on. I changed my screen saver settings so this would not happen approximately 20 hours ago.
Any chance this may have delayed the process?

Hi to all people at Toms hardware. After reading somewhere about wipe free space utility in CCleaner i decided to try it without having any specific reason. I chose. For privacy and security reasons, you can set CCleaner to wipe the free areas of your hard disk so that deleted files can never be recovered. Note: Wiping free space can take a substantial amount of time. Method 1 (Automatically wipe when cleaning): In CCleaner, click the CCleaner icon at left. On the Windows tab, select the Wipe Free Space check. •7-Pass: this writes zeroes seven times over the free space, and takes seven times as long. A 7-pass erasure using random data will do a pretty complete job to prevent reconstruction of the data on the drive.
